aast Advanced Architecture Settimo-Tokyo
is a series of events ideated by CASARTARC, an architectural association in Italy, with Andrea Graziano and Davide Del Giudice, to link the host cities of the UIA International Congress of Architecture in 2008 and 2011: Turin and Tokyo.
Ar. Lorena Alessio (founder of Casartarc) and Ar. Marco Corbella (Design Manager at Ishimoto Architectural & Engineering Firm Inc.) both studied in Turin and in Tokyo and started collaborating in 2007 on projects of international cultural exchange between Italy and Japan with the exhibition "Progettare ai Margini" (Design at the Limits) at the Italian Institute of Culture in Tokyo.
In 2009 a collaboration was started with prof. Yasushi Ikeda of Keio University who was organizing the ALGODE international symposium on Algorithmic Design for AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan): Ar. Alessio and Ar. Corbella joined the ALGODE organization as members of the International Advisory Committee and prof. Ikeda joined the organizing committee of aast.
As a joint event of ALGODE TOKYO 2011 and as pre-event of UIA 2011 Tokyo, the aast international student workshop was thus first offered in March 2011 on the theme:
"Generative Space for Tokyo: innovative use of wood with algorithmic design".
42 students including 22 Japanese students and 20 students of other nationalities (USA, Italy, Greece, Sudan, Russia, China) were admitted to the portfolio selection and divided in 6 teams of 7 students each.
The workshop was about to start in March when the Tohoku Eartquake stroke Japan, forcing a postponement and a revision of the program. The few foreign students that had already landed in Tokyo were safely repatriated in the following days.
The aast International Workshop restarted with a revised theme and program in July 2011 and was brought succesfully to completion on September 10th with 4 international teams and 24 participants.
